Thousands of youth have staged a surprise march in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) after the Uhuru Park Shujaaz Memorial Concert on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
Hundreds of those who attended the concert at Uhuru Park converged in the Central Business District where they chanted songs in honour of the fallen heroes.
Areas around the Tom Mboya statue and National Archives were the central areas where most of the youth gathered while honouring their peers who lost their lives at the height of the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.
Police were compelled to watch from a side as the protesters went on with their business in Nairobi City centre.
The peaceful demonstration continued up until around 8:20 pm when police officers pleaded with the youth to leave peacefully and head back home.
Hundreds of the youth who were in the city obliged and decided to leave Nairobi CBD peacefully.
By the time of this publication, no incidences of clashes between the police and the protesters had been reported.
The protests were staged after a handful of activities at Uhuru Park in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the demos.
Some of the attendees mounted white crosses wrapped up in Kenyan flags while others used that opportunity to express their condolences to the departed souls.
Some of the names which were on the crosses included Brian Lemaiyan Kasaine, Austin Makokha, Mike Kihuga, Kelvin Madanga, Chris Gitonga, Rex Masai, Kevin Andrew Mwasi, Beasley Kamau, David Chege, Erikson Mutisya, Ibrahim Wanjiku, Kelvin Odhiambo, Wilson Sitati and Matthew Njoroge.
Several artists also performed at the event including Khaligraph Jones Bien, Fena Gitu, Nameless, Octopizzo, Charisma, Juliani, Eric Wainaina, Dj Double Trouble, Field Marshals, Band Njerae, Dj Lordwin and Sanaipei Tande.
