The Igad Climate Predictions and Application Center (ICPAC) is warning that the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) could experience warmer than average temperature in the next one week.
In its weekly forecast, ICPAC says that moderate to high temperatures of between 20-32℃elsius are expected over most parts of South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea and southern and north-eastern Ethiopia.
The Igad region’s weather center says that mild temperature conditions of less than 20℃elsiius are expected over most parts of Sudan, central Ethiopia, and parts of northern Somalia, central to western Kenya and western regions of Rwanda and Burundi.
While this is the case temperature anomalies are also expected that will see cooler than usual temperatures expected over parts of central Sudan and south-eastern Kenya. “Cautionary heat stress levels are expected over the eastern regions of Tanzania and Kenya, and southern Somalia,” says the statement released by ICPAC.
The week will also see moderate rainfall of between 50 and 200millimeters over most parts of central to western Tanzania, Burundi, and a few parts of southern Rwanda and south-western Kenya.
Light rainfall of less than 50 millimeters is expected over parts of Rwanda, northern Burundi, southern and western Kenya, south-eastern Uganda, eastern Tanzania, and regions along the Red Sea coast. The rainfall anomalies observed is the expected more than usual rainfall over parts of central Tanzania to south-western Kenya as well as the less than usual rainfall expected over southern and western regions of Tanzania.
ICPAC is warning of floods due to the very heavy rainfall expected over a few places in parts of central Tanzania is likely to lead to isolated flood incidences.
The regional weather center is urging communities in high-risk areas to exercise caution during the period when there will be adverse weather conditions.
