The United Democratic Alliance party (UDA) has distanced itself from remarks by Fafi MP Salah Yakub claiming there is a plan to amend the constitution and remove the presidential term.
The 2010 constitution provides that a president is eligible for two consecutive terms of five years each, starting from the date the president is sworn in.
Speaking in an interview with Nation Newspaper, the MP said some UDA Legislators were working on a constitutional amendment bill to replace the two-term limit with an age limit of 75 years.
While he didn’t reveal the identity of the said MPs, Yakub said they had heald closed door meetings to deliberate on the matter before drafting the bill and forwarding it to Parliament.
The Party has however dismissed the claims saying, “remarks by Fafi MP Salah Yakub that there are plans to extend term limits for the President are a product of a fertile imagination by the legislator. UDA distances itself from the utterances by the MP.”
The Party further said it has not been part of discussions in regard to term limits and will not be part of the sideshows.
On his Twitter handle, UDA Chairman Johnson Muthama said, “The statement by Fafi MP, Hon. Salah Yakub on scrapping of the presidential term limit and cap it on age limit has made many Kenyans concerned and many have called me asking for the position of the party.”
Muthama said Yakub made a personal statement which has nothing to do with the UDA party adding that as a Party, they stand for open Democracy and remain in support of the two-term presidential limit saying there are no ongoing discussions to scrap it.
