A Kenyan family is in mourning after their loved one was stabbed to death at a mental health care centre in North Carolina, United States.
In the fatal incident, June Onkundi, a mental health nurse met her untimely death after a mentally ill patient identified as Jams Gomes, 47, stabbed her with a knife while on duty at the facility.
Police who arrived at the scene of crime are yet to disclose how the patient obtained the weapon used during the attack.
Onkundi’s family has expressed their utmost disappointment in the facility for not ‘providing’ safety mechanisms to safeguard staff members working at the facility.
“I am confused because a place of work is supposed to provide safety mechanisms for the staff members to be safe just to make sure another family member does not go through the pain that we are going through today,” Andrew Nyabwari, a brother-in-law to Onkundi stated.
He added: “As family members, it is very painful we are saddened that the very same population she had the passion and desire to help is the one that finally took her away from us and left us now grieving with four children and a husband.”
It is reported that Onkundi’s attacker was a serial misogynistic criminal who has served various terms in prison for targeting different women in the city.
“The suspect has a history of attacking women. Each time he gets out of prison, it’s a matter of months before he returns back behind bars. Gomes was convicted in 2006 of attempted rape and kidnapping,” Sarah Kruger, a reporter in Raleigh, North Carolina stated.
