The former Nairobi county governor Mike Sonko has reiterated his commitment towards supporting Kenyan boxing legend Conjestina Achieng’ who turned 45 years on Mashujaa holiday.
He was speaking on Thursday at the Mombasa women rehab centre where he organised a celebration ceremony for the pugilist who brought fame to the country during her prime days.
The former World Boxing Association middleweight champion has been suffering from mental illness since 2011 when she was diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder.
‘Conje’ as she is commonly known had her life taking a turn for the worse and has been voicing her anger over being neglected by the country that adored her during her peak times in her boxing career.
Sonko who has been supportive of Kenyan legendary pugilist assured country’s boxing fraternity that the the former World Boxing Association middleweight champion is progressing good and will be ultimately okay
“I have been on top of Conje’s issue for sometime now and my mission is to see her back to normal. “I’ll personally ensure she is fully treated and rehabilitated, before she’s assisted to get a stable job to enable her become financially independent,” noted Sonko.
“The team is doing all they can and we should hope for the best.Over two years ago we pioneered this after airlifting her from Kisumu to the rehab in Diani due to public outcry that the state had neglected her and she left the facility in good state after over a month and we continue hoping for the best ” he added
In 2019 she had hinted about a return to the boxing ring after gracing the second edition of the Nairobi Fight Night at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in March, where WBC Super Bantamweight champion Fatuma Zarika took on Zambia’s Catherine Phiri.
She became the first African to clinch an international title as the middleweight champion in the Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF), she was nicknamed “hands of stone”.
