National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has described his late mother as a strict disciplinarian and a passionate advocate for education.
In a statement on Saturday, December 21, 2024, Wetangula revealed that Mama Anne Nanyama Wetang’ula was a devout Catholic and an active member of the Catholic Women’s Association and the Legion of Mary.
Mama Anne passed away on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the age of 94 after a long illness.
“I would like to convey my deepest gratitude to everyone who have condoled our family following the passing of our matriarch Mama Anne Nanyama Wetang’ula which occurred after a long illness. Born on the 9th of March, 1930, into the Babuya clan from Sirare Village, our dear mother for her firmness and commitment to any cause that she undertook,” Wetang’ula stated.
“A strict disciplinarian and passionate advocate for education, Mama Anne was also a devout Catholic and an active member of the Catholic Women’s Association and the Legion of Mary.”
The speaker also revealed that she was an expert in preparing traditional traditional meals, a craft she happily passed on to anyone eager to learn.
“Mama Anne was a teacher by profession thereby instilling in her family the virtues of respect, honesty, and trust. She was also a dedicated farmer and a passionate advocate for equity,” he added.
President William Ruto led the nation in mourning the death of Anne Nanyama, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s mother.
“Our condolences to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Mheshimiwa Timothy Wanyonyi for the loss of your dear mother. Anne Nanyama was a progressive, responsible and caring woman who raised upright children,” Ruto’s statement read in part.
“May God grant comfort to the family, friends and the people of Bungoma at this sad time,” it added.
