A woman who critically stabbed her 74-year-old grandmother after a quarrel over a piece of uncooked fish has pleaded guilty to charges of causing grievous bodily harm.

Binti Asma Juma, who appeared before Mombasa Chief magistrate Martha Mutuku, pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting her grandmother Binti Hamisi by stabbing her using a kitchen knife after the complainant stopped her from cooking in her house.

At the time of the incident, her grandmother, the complainant, was preparing the fish by removing its scales which the suspect wanted to cook. However, the grandmother stopped her and a confrontation ensued. The accused person grabbed the knife and stabbed the grandmother in the stomach.

The magistrate was unable to sentence the accused person, even after her own admission to the offence, after principal prosecution counsel Alex Gituma informed the court that the compalainant in the case was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) fighting for her life.

“I request the court to differ her sentencing, awaiting the medical report of the victim who is at the ICU Coast General Hospital. She is yet to wake up from coma following the assault and her condition is critical,” Gituma said.

Mutuku directed the suspect to be held at Shimo La Tewa G.k prison awaiting the victim’s medical report.

The charges are that on December 4, 2022, in the Miritini area of Jomvu sub-county within Mombasa county willfully and unlawfully assaulted Hamisi by stabbing her with a kitchen knife.

The matter will be mentioned on December 15 for further directions.
