The Kenya men’s rugby sevens team finished sixth at the first leg of Rugby Africa Cup after losing 19-28 to Zimbabwe in the fifth place play off final of the championship at Labourdonnais Sports Grounds, Mapou,Mauritius.
Enroute to the play off final Kenya had beaten Ivory Coast 22-5 in the semis while Zimbabwe saw off Mauritius 42-7.
Kenya had lost to South Africa in the quarter finals after finishing the groups in second position.
Uganda emerged champions after beating Madagascar 31-12 while South Africa beat Burkinafaso 35-7 to clinch Bronze.
Following the conclusion of the first leg Uganda sits top with 20 points while Madagascar is second two points adrift.
South Africa, Burkinafaso and Zimbabwe lie in third to fifth positions respectively.
The teams now switch their focus to the next weekend’s second leg where two top finishers will qualify for next season’s HSBC Challenger series.
Kenya and South Africa are not eligible for the promotion since they already secured their slots in the elite sevens world circuit.
