The county head’s revelation was in response to a Twitter user who wondered where the source of funds for the billboards came from.
“Lakini Sakaja even as we continue supporting you, just stop those cheap PR stunts. I hope you usd your own money to pay for those ‘welcome back’ billboards. Just do what you were elected to do, which is to fix Nairobi. PR na vipindiree achia Sonko” the tweet read.
In a subsequent rejoinder, Sakaja opined that he used his own money for the project and claimed that many city dwellers loved and appreciated it.
“Yes, I used my own money. You may not like it, many appreciate it,” Sakaja wrote.
Yes I used my own money. You may not like it, many appreciate it.
In the billboards erected by Sakaja and his deputy Njoroge Muchiri, the two wished Nairobians a prosperous new year as they return to the city.
“Welcome back, prosperous 2023! Let’s make Nairobi work,” the billboard reads.
They have been spotted along the Thika super-highway, Waiyaki way and Mombasa road.
The billboards have caused an uproar on social media after a section of netizens wondered whether the governor used taxpayers’ money to welcome them back to the city.
While some poked holes and gave their opinions on how the money ought to have been used others expressed their utmost gratitude to the governor for the warm gesture.
