Lawyer Miguna Miguna now says he is not beholden to President William Ruto for facilitating his return.
Speaking during an interview with NTV‘s Joe Ageyo, the firebrand lawyer who returned to the country on Thursday, October 20, 2022, stated that it was the government’s obligation to honour the court order by facilitating his return to the country.
“I will never be beholden to anybody for obeying the court order, for upholding a constitution and for acting in accordance with the will of the law, I don’t feel beholden to anyone,” he stated.
While maintaining that it was Ruto’s duty to ensure he was back in the country, the accomplished lawyer further acknowledged that he did not ask the current administration to facilitate his return.
“I did not ask President Ruto to facilitate my return it was a duty he had to fulfill, the only thing he did not do was to buy my air ticket, which he ought to have,” he stated.
Miguna further defended Ruto from claims that he was part of the administration that forced him out of the country.
“Ruto delivered, he has honoured my rights, he did not deceive me, he did not betray me,” Miguna added.
Miguna had been deported to Canada where he is also a citizen following his role in the unofficial swearing-in of opposition leader Raila Odinga as “the people’s president” back in 2018.
In April this year, while appearing for a media interview, Matiang’i indicated that Miguna was required to fill out a one-page document to re-register for Kenya citizenship.
Matiang’i said that was the only way the lawyer would secure his travel back according to the new constitution.
“You have to fill out a piece of paper so that you regain your Kenyan passport or citizenship. There’s a judgment by the court on this matter which prescribed clearly how you regain your citizenship,” Matiang’i stated.
He added: “There are court rulings in place by the high court on how you regain citizenship after you lost citizenship in the old constitution. Because in the old constitution you were not allowed to have dual citizenship.”
