Former acting Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) Director-General Mercy Wanjau has said she is ready to take lower pay if approved by the parliament for the position of secretary to the Cabinet.

This was after National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah queried why the former CA boss was comfortable with a lower salary compared to her previous earnings at the CAK.

Wanjau previously earned a gross salary of Ksh1.45million per month compared to the Ksh924,000 she is set to earn in the new role if approved by the members of the Appointment Committee.

“..You are willing to take a pay cut when everybody in the country is now looking for a pay rise? What is the motivation that is motivating you to take a pay cut” Ichung’wah posed.

In a subsequent rejoinder before the National Assembly Committee on appointments on Saturday, October 22, 2022, Wanjau affirmed that she was comfortable with the lower pay because the role would provide her with a great opportunity to serve in the position.

“The state corporation world and that this presents different skills from the central government but I have been in public service all these years and this indeed presents a gross opportunity for me. I am able to make adjustments for this role,” she stated.

“I believe this kind of move is not unusual, we have had this kind of cases, particularly where individuals have crossed from sectors that paid more,” she added.
