Thousands of Gatundu North residents in Kiambu County will enjoy Christmas with ease after the area MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia treated them with foodstuffs and other gifts.

Long queues were witnessed at Mwea Primary School where the lawmaker stormed with a trailer full of foodstuffs and Christmas gifts which he distributed to locals in the spirit of sharing Christ’s message and love through the giving of food items.

The MP urged Kenyans to celebrate the festive season responsibly by desisting from activities that may endanger their lives.

In particular, the MP urged drivers to be keen on the road to avert accidents that often occur due to careless driving.

He further warned locals against engaging in dangerous drinking sprees and especially the harmful uptake of illicit brews that is widespread in various parts of the constituency.

The lawmaker vowed to begin a crackdown on manufacture, sale, and consumption of outlawed substances such as chang’aa in collaboration with residents.

“Careless driving, excessive alcohol consumption by residents and other socially unacceptable behaviours that infringe on the rights of others should be avoided by everyone. We want to have a peaceful Christmas.

“Like I have told the people, illicit brews will be fought by all of us including the government and the people. Those who manufacture should stand warned that their days are numbered as they in most cases do not consume what they sell to our people,” the MP said.

On their part, food donation beneficiaries lauded the good gesture saying the gifts were timely as most of them had no hope of enjoying the big day due to lack of food.

Most residents described this year’s Christmas as special as they will be mingling with their family members and friends after two years of social distancing due to Covid-19.

They said that life has been tough due to harsh economic times precipitated by international pressures and Covid-19.

“I’m thrilled by this gesture. I had lost hope and my children had no food to enjoy Christmas. I will now start cooking chapati and other meals which will definitely put a smile on the faces of my children,” stated Mary Nyambura Gachanja, a resident.

Many people have traveled far and wide to join their family members upcountry to enjoy the long holiday.
