The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has expressed concern over the country’s unity following Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment motion.

Speaking on Monday, October 14, 2024, NCIC Chairman Samuel Kobia warned that the country’s unity would be at threat should the Senate impeach the DP, he additionally warned that if the impeachment is successful there could be conflicts between the people of Mt Kenya and other parts of the country.

“Our major concern is that the way DP Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment process is shaping up could easily lead to conflicts between the people of Mt Kenya area and people from other parts of the country, this is what we are worried about,” he said.

The NCIC chair also urged the Senate to be impartial when handling the DP’s impeachment motion.

“We feel that the Senate in handling this matter should do it in a way that all Kenyana will feel that it has been fair and it has been done according to the law,” Kobia added.

Last week, 281 Members of Parliament (MPs) voted to impeach the DP over various grounds including abuse of office, undermining devolution, violation of the Constitution and gross misconduct among others.

44 MPs, however, voted against the impeachment motion, whereas one MP abstained from voting.

The DP’s fate now lies with the senate where he will be tried in plenary sessions following his impeachment by the National Assembly.
