Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has visited ailing Gikuyu music maestro Paul Mutonga famously known as Wanganangu.
Gachagua noted that he decided to visit his old friend after receiving reports that he was unwell.
According to the Second in Command, he met the legendary singer Wanganangu when he was serving as District Officer in Kiambaa, Kiambu County, between 1993 and 1996.
“Premised on tradition and culture, I loved and enjoyed-which I still do- his creatively, carefully composed songs, which truly remain highly educative, entertaining and informative,” Gachagua stated.
“Wanganangu was a common feature at our functions and guests were thoroughly entertained by this gifted musician, whose unique and distinct rendition was no match in his genre. We became friends; we grew into great friends.”
Despite being 95 years old, Gachagua noted that Wanganangu still has the vocals and tunes that soothe his fans.
“Today, accompanied by leaders, we paid him a visit at his home in Muchatha. I was very happy to find him doing well. At 95 years old, the golden voice and the highly infectious smile are intact; it was thrilling listening to him again as he belted some of his great songs,” Gachagua stated.
“We thank God for Wanganangu and continue to pray that He grants him long life. It is important to always remember, cherish and value our heroes such Wanganangu because in their artistry, we promote and preserve our culture and traditions.”
Wanganangu was presented with household items and gifts for his family, celebrating his significant contributions to our cultural heritage.
