It has now emerged that the seven-storey building that collapsed Wednesday afternoon in Rongo town, Migori, had been flagged by the National Construction Authority (NCA).
In a statement, the NCA revealed that the project had been suspended after a routine quality assurance check by the Authority’s compliance team raised concerns about the building’s structural integrity.
“At the time of the collapse, the project had been suspended after a routine quality assurance check by the Authority’s compliance team raised concerns on the structural integrity of the building under construction and the developer directed to produce a structural integrity report before the construction could proceed,” NCA boss Eng Maurice Akech said.
He stated that the NCA will investigate the 4.30 pm incident, which has left three people injured by the falling debris while the search for missing construction workers continues.
“A detailed investigation will be conducted in the coming days to determine the actual cause of failure for this development. Any person who will be found to have acted in contravention of the law and or/defied any lawful directions issued by a competent Authority will be subjected to the full force of the law” he warned.
The project was registered with the National Construction Authority under registration number 51625315710072.
“The developer on record is Mr. Daniel Obuya Ooko, while the consultants on record are Arch. Joseph Ralph Odhiambo (A577), Eng. Joel Kireu Wairua (A2699) and Qs. Brian Otieno Oluoch (Q1046). The contractor is Build High Enterprises” he revealed.
Reports of a fatality have yet to be confirmed.
