Residents of Seisei village in Baragoi, Samburu north Sub County are in shock after children slaughtered and ate a puppy as famine continues to ravage the county.
According to area Chief Tony Lesokoyo, the incident happened over the weekend when several children between the ages of four and eight years slaughtered a dog roasted its meat and consumed it.
Lesokoyo said that after receiving the news he headed to the village which has 140 households and confirmed that three children had indeed consumed dog meat.
“The children were alone at home when they decided to eat the six month old puppy after informing their parents that they are in dire need of food,” he said.
The chief noted that families in Samburu north are facing starvation due to prolonged drought that has hit the area and there is need for immediate relief food intervention.
Samburu North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Jackson Oloo confirmed that the three children did not fall ill after eating the dog meat.
He, however, said that starvation is not the reason for eating dog meat adding that the children might have been playing when they slaughtered the dog.
“There are goats in that Manyatta and if they were starving their parents would have opted to slaughter a goat instead of a dog,” the DCC said.
In October 2022, Samburu county governor Lati Lelelit announced that over 157,000 Samburu residents are facing hunger and starvation due to the ongoing drought.
