A family in Runda, Nairobi is mourning the death of their 8-year-old son who drowned while swimming with friends.

It is reported that the children got into the pool during their visit to a nearby home for a tuition exchange programme. At the time, there was no attendant at the pool.

Master Ivan Apiyo’s lifeless body was found in the pool after the other children alerted the owners of the house.

Police confirmed the incident stating that they were investigating the matter.

The two girls aged 9 and 10 years were among tens of other children swimming at a hotel swimming pool before they drowned.

The two were rushed to a nearby dispensary but pronounced dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident, Loitoktok Sub County police commander Shadrack Ruto said investigations into the incident had commenced.

“It is such a tragic way to start the year. Losing two young souls who were out to enjoy the moment is a big blow to their family. Unfortunately, efforts to save the two did not bear fruit as they all succumbed,” Ruto said.

” It is only right if children are fully managed during any adventure. The management should at all times be in control of children’s whereabouts, especially on matters like swimming. Children cannot take care of others and assuming they are just having fun at times can turn tragic,” he added.

Ruto also cautions parents to be vigilant of their kids and not leave them unattended.

“Every parent has a duty to give attention to their kid even during a vacation. We have commenced investigations into the incident,” he said.

The bodies were moved to Loitoktok Subcounty hospital awaiting postmortem as investigations commenced.
