Kirinyaga county government has vehemently dismissed a report doing rounds on various social media platforms regarding the spread of Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STIs) amongst students from the Kirinyaga Central constituency.

The social media report indicates that out of approximately 16,000 students, 12,000 were suffering from various STIs.

But through the Ministry of Health, the county government has dismissed the figures.

The Chief Executive Member of health, George Karoki, said that the figures were not factual therefore should be treated as rumours.

“The said statement says that out of 16,000 students, 12,000 students in Kiringaya Central have been diagnosed with STIs but that is not true,” Karoki said

The official however gave factual figures from the ministry of health, recorded in a period of one year, 2022.

According to the statistics provided by the department of health, at least 4, 409 people have so far been diagnosed and treated for various STIs in 2022.

Karoki also added that out of the total, 1,345 were members of the public and not students as indicated in the social media report doing rounds on the internet.

“In Kiringaya Central Constituency, we have recorded 1,345 and are all members of the community and not students. Also, 4,409 people have received treatment for STIs across the county,” he said.

On his part, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Moses Ivuto dismissed the report, adding that there are procedures followed in case students are to be screened for various diseases.

“For any screening to be done on students about any disease, the ministry of education must give a go-ahead for the screening to be done and that is why we strongly disassociate ourselves with the clip,” the County Commissioner told the media.
