World Scout Parliamentary Union pays courtesy call to Wetangula

The World Scout Parliamentary Union (WSPU) Kenya Chapter paid a courtesy call to the Speaker of the National Assembly the Rt. Hon. (Sen.) Moses Masika Wetang’ula.

The delegation presented the Mantle accorded to them for hosting the Eleventh General Assembly to the Speaker of the National Assembly who is the Patron of the Association.

The WSPU Kenya also presented goodwill messages to the Speaker from the just concluded Tenth WSPU General Assembly in Jeonju, Republic of South Korea.

The Speaker urged Honorable Members of the Scouts Association to lead by example and endeavour to emulate the spirit of the late Mother Teresa who globally did enormous humanitarian and charitable works voluntarily.

“The Scout Movement has often since time immemorial been at the forefront in impacting life skills among all age groups. I urge you, members, to continue seeking areas of mutual interests with other caucuses in Parliament for possible areas of collaboration,” Speaker Wetang’ula said.

The Speaker promised to ensure that the Thirteenth Parliament works together with WSPU to achieve the association’s goals.

“Whenever we host WSPU meetings, Parliament will give support to showcase Kenya’s history in the scouting journey,” he said.

John Kiarie MP Dagoretti South, the President of the WSPU Kenya and also the 1st Vice President globally said that there is a need to review the existing Scouts ACT in order to align it to the Constitution of Kenya 2010 so as to incorporate activities of the Association in the devolved units.

“Kenya was privileged to be the first-ever African nation to be accorded the opportunity to host the WSPU General Assembly since the Scout Movement inception in 1991,” said Kiarie.

The lawmaker revealed that the Association will be engaging in Tree Planting activities in Kirinyanga and Nyeri counties this coming weekend in a bid to preserve the environment and mitigate climate change.

The Committee requested the Speaker to take a lead role in the Steering Committee organizing the 2025 WSPU General Assembly set to be held in the country.

The WSPU Kenya Chapter informed the Speaker that as their Patron, he would be treated to an Investiture Ceremony; a recurring event for the Scouts Movement for oath-taking.

The tenth WSPU General Assembly took place early this month in Jeonju, the Republic of South Korea where Kenya was privileged to be given the opportunity the host the first-ever WSPU General Assembly in Africa come 2025.

The Kenyan delegation that attended the WSPU General Assembly in South Korea comprised of; Ambassador Mwende Mwinzi, Kenyan Ambassador to Korea; H.E. Mwalimu Edward Mutahi Kahiga, Governor, Nyeri County, Sen. Tabitha Mutinda, First Vice-President, WSPU Kenya; Hon. Dorice Donya, Second Vice-President WSPU Kenya; Hon. Ferdinand Wanyonyi; Hon. Yussuf Farah; representatives of the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sports & the Arts, Rainforest Alliance and the National Police Service.  Hon. John Kiarie is the First Vice-President of WSPU and President of WSPU Kenya.

Further, the Executive Director of WSPU Kenya Poppins Misoi presented plans for the WSPU Africa Assembly 2023 and WSPU General Assembly slotted from 2025.

The Parliamentary Scouts Caucus also held a meeting in Parliament to deliberate on the events of the Tenth WSPU General Assembly and forge the way forward for the Association.

The World Scout Parliamentary Union (WSPU) is an independent Association founded in Korea in 1991 and unites scout-oriented parliamentarians from all over the world to strengthen the Scout Movement to promote youth empowerment.

Present in the meeting included; John Kiarie MP Dagoret South who is the President of the WSPU Kenya and also the  1st Vice President globally, Senator Tabitha Mutinda MP who doubles up as the WSPU Kenya 1st Vice President, John Kaguchia MP Mukuruweini who serves as the Scouts Tourism Head, Zack Kinuthia who is currently the lead Technical Committee, Peter Musaichi the Deputy Director of Devolution Ministry, Michael Onchabo the Director of RainForest Alliance, Carolyne Okello the Principal Youth Officer Ministry of Youth Sports and the Arts and  Poppins Misoi the Executive Director WSPU Kenya.
