Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi has issued a statement urging Kenyans to practice road safety ahead of the festive season.
In his statement, Mudavadi, while referring to a recent accident that claimed 13 lives at River Yala’s Iguhu Bridge along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway, asked Kenyans to exercise extra caution and vigilance to ensure safety.
He equally condoled with the families of those affected wishing them comfort and strength as they navigate the tough times.
The Prime CS also sent his heartfelt wishes for swift and full recovery to those injured.
“I am saddened by the grisly accident and join in mourning with the families who have tragically lost their 13 loved ones in the unfortunate accident at Iguhu Bridge along Kisumu-Kakamega Highway. In this time of profound grief, may the Lord grant them comfort and strength.
“To those who have been injured, I send my heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery,” he said.
Adding;
“As we approach the festive season, I urge all road users to exercise extra caution and vigilance to ensure the safety of all and as our students sitting for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams and Kenyans prepare for the festive season I would like to urge all motorists to exercise extra caution on our roads.”
Additionally, Mudavadi instructed traffic police officers to ensure that all PSVs are roadworthy and driven safely to avert accidents.
He also directed traffic officers to ensure that all PSVs on the road are registered appropriately with clear indications of the Sacco/company or institutions they represent.
He also indicated that traffic officers must ensure that PSVs have inspection status and operate from their licensed routes.
“I hereby instruct all traffic police officers to ensure that all PSVs are roadworthy and are driven safely. They must ensure that all the PSVs on the road have the registered name of the Sacco/Company/Institution, have inspection status and operate from their licensed routes. Also important is that each PSV must have a valid Road Service Licence,” he added.
