Two persons of interest accused of impersonating officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have been arrested.
According to a statement shared by DCI on their social media pages, the two were arrested by detectives from the Nairobi Regional Headquarters for impersonation and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.
The two, Nicholas Okoth Owino and David Otieno Odhiambo are accused of extorting over Ksh200,000 from a citizen after pretending to be DCI officers.
This was after assuring the victim that they could expedite an ongoing investigation.
“Reports indicate that Nicholas Okoth Owino and David Otieno Odhiambo unlawfully extorted over Sh200,000 from a citizen by falsely presenting themselves as DCI officers. They claimed they could expedite an ongoing investigation, luring the victim into their scam.
“As the investigation unfolds, detectives are exploring the possibility that the duo may have targeted other victims in a similar fashion,” DCI said.
The two are currently cooling their heels in police custody pending arraignment.
Following the arrest of the two, detectives have urged anyone who has fallen prey to the fraudsters to present themselves to the nearest police station.
