President William Ruto on Friday, November 1, 2024, shared a moment with his new deputy Kithure Kindiki shortly after he was sworn in as Kenya’s third DP under the new constitution. 

Video clips from the event show the president heartily embracing his DP before handing him a copy of the constitution. 

The event held at at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) was filled with joy and celebrations from jubilant Kenyans as the former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) assumed office. 

“I, Kithure Kindiki, do swear that I will always truly and diligently serve the people and the Republic of Kenya in the office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya; that I will diligently discharge my duties and perform my functions in the said office, to the best of my judgment; that I will at all times, when so required, faithfully and truly give my counsel and advice to the President of the Republic of Kenya; that I will do justice to all without fear, favour, affection or ill-will; and that I will not directly or indirectly reveal such matters as shall come to my knowledge in the discharge of my duties and committed to my secrecy, so help me God,” Kindiki affirmed amid cheers from the crowd. 

His appointment follows former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s legal fights after he was impeached by parliament. 

After he was impeached by Parliament and later the Senate, Gachagua who failed to appear for cross-examination at the Senate, moved to court to sought orders barring Kindiki from taking oath of office. 

However, a three-bench at the High Court comprised of Justices Eric Ogola, Anthony Mrima, and Fredah Mugambi overturned the orders.

Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and CS for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, will assume acting responsibility for the security docket when Kindiki relocates to the Harambee Annex office.
