The former Interior Cabinet Secretary has been sworn in at an event that was held at KICC on Friday, November 1, 2024.
Kindiki assumes office after the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua, Ruto’s first deputy.
He is the third deputy president under the 2010 Constitution.
As he moves to the Harambee Annex office, Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and CS for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, will take charge of the security docket in an acting capacity.
In 2013 during the general election, Kindiki was elected to represent Tharaka-Nithi County in the Senate
He was chosen to serve as the Senate’s first majority leader. He was re-elected in the 2017 election and was chosen to be the Deputy Speaker of the Senate.
In 2022 he was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Interior, he was later dismissed from the cabinet on July 11, 2024, but was re-appointed back to the cabinet on July 19, 2024, as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Administration.
This is Kindiki’s second role in the Kenya Kwanza administration. When Ruto won the 2022 elections as president, he appointed the law scholar as his Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security.
After the Gen Z demonstrations, he was maintained in the same position after the cabinet was dissolved.
Ruto, after Gachagua’s impeachment process was completed in parliament, nominated Kindiki, and he was consequently approved by the National Assembly.
