Dadaab Member of Parliament Farah Maalim has defended President William Ruto’s track record of development since he took office almost two years ago, saying he has outshone leaders before him.

The lawmaker says Ruto, who was sworn into office in September 2022, has achieved more in almost every sector of the economy compared to the four former presidents of the Republic of Kenya.

“To be fair the economy is today doing better than it did 3 years back,” he remarked

He cited the country’s foreign debt and the performance of the Shilling against the US Dollar as some of the remarkable successes that Ruto has achieved.

“President William Ruto has performed better than any other President before him in the first two years of office. The Kenya shilling gained massively against all other convertible currencies & continues to get stronger in the midst of all those protests,” he said in a post on X

“He has borrowed from WB & IMF to retire debilitating Chinese loans & Eurobond borrowed by his predecessor,” added Maalim, who is also a former Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly

Having experienced two major sets of anti-government protests in 2023 and 2024, he said Ruto deserves a pat on the back for maintaining economic stability in the country. He pointed out that many countries suffer greatly from similar citizen demonstrations, but Ruto has managed to keep the situation under control.

“Both Nigerian & Bangladesh currencies lost big time after protests,” he said

According to the outspoken legislator, President Ruto has made significant reductions in government spending as part of his efforts to address wastage in the public sector. The legislator specifically mentioned budget cuts in the President’s office and the office of the First Lady.
In addition to these budget cuts, the legislator also highlighted other achievements under President Ruto’s leadership. He mentioned a notable increase in the number of Kenyans finding employment abroad, reforms in the coffee and tea sectors, and positive progress in the sugar industry towards self-sufficiency.

Overall, the legislator believes that these accomplishments deserve recognition and praise.

“Let’s give Ruto space to perform. One wonders why, under Uhuru, Kenyans didn’t raise the issues they are raising now and protest,” he said
