National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Tuesday, October 25 unanimously rejected the nomination of Peninah Malonza as the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Tourism, Wildlife, and Heritage.
In a notice of motion in Parliament, Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah said the Committee chaired by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula had approved the nomination of the other 21 Cabinet Secretary nominees.
Also approved is the nomination of Justin Muturi as Attorney General and Mercy Wanjau as the Secretary to the Cabinet.
The committee unanimously agreed that Malonza lacks the requisite abilities and experience to serve as CS for Tourism.
“The nominee did not demonstrate knowledge on topical, administrative, and technical issues touching on the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage.
“Consequently, the nominee lacks requisite abilities and experience to serve as the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage,” the committee said in a report tabled in Parliament.
Parliament is expected to debate the committee report this afternoon.
At the same time, Minority leadership led by Ugunja Member of Parliament (MP) Opiyo Wandayi recorded a descending opinion following the approval of Aisha Jumwa as Gender and Public Service CS and Mithika Linturi as Agriculture and Livestock Development CS.
The minority said the two lack integrity to serve as CSs.
“They noted that the basis for the rejection of the two nominees was premised on integrity questions, contrary to the clear provisions of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
“The members were of the firm view that Chapter Six of the Constitution was put in place by Kenyans at constitution making, well aware of the highest ethics of standards of ethics and morality they needed to see the holders of public offices,” the report added.
