Kenya Railways (KR) has announced exciting features for travelers on the soon-to-be-launched premium class coaches of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger train.

The revelation came in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

These include spacious seats, delicious meals, a wide selection of entertainment options, a dedicated train crew for top-notch service, and Wi-Fi throughout the journey.

“The Premium Class Coach is a promise of a luxurious and comfortable train journey. Passengers will enjoy spacious seats, delicious meals, a wide selection of entertainment, dedicated train crew for top-notch service, and Wi-Fi during the journey,” Kenya Railways said.

KR recently acquired 20 new passenger coaches which have modern features designed to elevate the customer experience.

The new coaches include 4 premium, 3 first class and 11 upgraded economy coaches, 1 dining car and 1 power car.

The new economy class also stands out for several features designed to enhance passenger comfort. Notably, passengers will no longer sit facing each other.

Instead, the 3 by 2 seating arrangement across the width of the coach will have passengers facing either the departing station or the destination station.

Other features include charging ports for each passenger; a baby-changing area for freshening up babies during the journey; foldout tray tables and pocket seats for placing small items.

Kenya Railways offers commuter services between Mombasa and Nairobi with stops in between.

KR has however not yet suggested the prices for the new premium class coaches even though there have been murmurs on social media that it would cost as much as Ksh12,000.

Kenya Railways announced a 50 per cent fare hike for Nairobi to Mombasa SGR passengers starting January 1, 2024.

Passengers travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa now pay Ksh1,500 (economy class) and Ksh4,500 (first class) up from Ksh1,000 (economy class) and Ksh3,000 (first class).
